This young couple moved from Massachusetts to Maine to fulfill their tiny home dreams
“Thoughtful design” is the terminology that comes to mind regarding Chris and Carly’s lifestyle in their 280-square-foot tiny home. On this episode of Dream Big, Live Small, the Maine-based couple gives viewers a tour of their functional and environmentally friendly tiny house surrounded by acres of forest.
As the rent kept climbing on their 1,200-square-foot house in Massachusetts, Chris, an environmental health and safety specialist, and Carly (@carlyy.bee) (@carly_sings), a musician, wanted a more financially and environmentally sustainable living situation . So, the couple opted for a custom-built, tiny home in Maine, built by the architecture firm, Tiny Homes of Maine (@tinyhomesofmaine).
The small residence features a spacious exterior with a welcoming patio, ready for a barbecue, and a small vegetable garden. A sizable tank supplies the home with water from a nearby natural spring.
Beginning the tour of the house’s interior, Carly shows viewers the cozy main living space, which includes a comfortable L-shaped couch, flat-screen television, and large windows for ample natural light. “Something we love about the home is all the wood that is used,” Carly tells In The Know about the aromatic pine and cedar that structure the house.
Moving on to the kitchen, Carly draws viewers’ attention to the charming butcher block countertops with a deep sink and electric appliances, including a 2-burner stove, air-fryer-microwave-convection oven combo, and refrigerator.
“We really utilize every single space we have for storage,” Carly mentions before showing viewers a wooden pull-out table beneath the kitchen counter in addition to a closet and cupboards built into the staircase.
Beyond the kitchen area is a small bathroom with a standing shower along with an odorless and waterless composting toilet. “We save a lot of water by using it, and it’s super environmentally friendly,” Carly explains, referring to the toilet.
On the other side of the house is the couple’s office space with room for a double monitor computer and recording setup for Carly’s live music streams. “My favorite part about this [room] is the sliding pocket door,” Chris says, noting the sound barrier and privacy it provides.
Last but not least, Carly takes viewers up the stairs to their cozy lofted bedroom, which features a skylight that opens for star-gazing. Two more windows supply the loft with more natural light and a comfortable atmosphere for the couple’s dog, Bella, to gaze at the scenery from the bed. The empty space above the ledge gives the loft a sense of character and openness to offset the additional storage next to the bed. In addition to the home’s natural and airy decor, arguably one of the most crucial wall fixtures is the AC/heat unit for braving Maine’s cold winters.
On top of the financial and environmental benefits, tiny house living has also been helpful for the couple’s relationship. “Living in a space like this, you learn so many things about each other,” Chris says before Carly concludes, “We wanted to fight back against that idea that you need all these material things to be happy when really we just want experiences to be happy.”
